Why Do I Struggle Losing Weight Even With Exercise

Exercising is supposed to be our guaranteed ticket to weight loss success. Many people believe that engaging in physical activity—doing calisthenics like push ups, squats, and burpees, or plyometrics (explosive exercises) like jumping jacks, jump squats, jump rope, and the like—will guarantee quick results.

But if you haven't determined the underlying cause of your weight issue or fitness level, you're setting yourself up for failure.

It's sort of like attempting to cook an unfamiliar dish for someone without having a clear recipe, or worse yet, not knowing about the possible food allergies that they may have. You'd be risking a painfully unsuccessful outcome by proceeding in that fashion.

Unfortunately, it’s all too common to overlook the uniqueness of each person's physical health, genetics, and life situation when determining an appropriate exercise plan. And more often than not, individuals take on the pressure and stress of figuring out the right exercise approach by themselves.

One popular option is to blindly follow a free, generic exercise routine available online, without regard to one’s specific needs. Another scenario might entail joining a group of friends or work colleagues who’ve been following an old (or new) routine together. Because we tend to think that one size fits all, especially in groups where people share a cultural or professional connection, we make the mistake of overlooking our own individual needs.

However, one’s overall health condition, gender and body type are just three (of many) physical factors that could create vastly different weight loss outcomes even with the same exercise and diet program.

As a result, it’s unsurprising that most people either experience temporary results or little to no success when implementing a generic program. Many get discouraged and lose motivation when they don't see immediate results from such programs, but without understanding the underlying cause of their weight issue, success will remain temporary and elusive. It's not always as simple as an eating and exercise problem.

If, for example, you have a history of prior musculoskeletal injuries and recurring chronic pain, your body requires a more customized program that incorporates safe and effective exercise routines. Program modifications that account for your strength, conditioning, and weight are also a must. Otherwise, you'll fall into a whack-a-mole trap and find achieving positive gains to be a never-ending struggle. The proverbial yo-yo effect or roller-coaster of weight and performance issues will likely be an ongoing problem.

Also, did you know that weight and injury issues often result in a variety of other physical and mental health concerns?

For example, many people are prescribed medications to manage these problems as a first option, in an attempt to fast-track the solution. Unfortunately, medication often comes with side effects which have the potential to stunt the body's regulatory centers. This basically means that while a medicine is treating symptoms of one issue, it’s causing a second issue that may now need treatment as well.

The great thing is there are natural options when considering a specialized exercise program. The evidence is overwhelmingly clear that exercise is hugely beneficial as a primary and natural means of managing weight and keeping illness at bay. Beyond weight-loss, there are innumerable categories of health benefits accrued from exercising.

Research has shown that physical activity leads to remarkable benefits that play a role on our weight and health goals.

Here's a list of benefits to consider:

• Improved maintenance of lost weight
• Preservation of lean body mass
• Improved psychological profile and self-esteem
• Improved mood
• Improved blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and blood lipid and lipoprotein values
• Reduced risk for morbidity and mortality.

As you can see, there are multiple things impacting how you lose weight. Genetics, life stresses, gender, physical health and prior injuries are all contributing factors to an individual's ability to lose weight. How you exercise may require a strategic professional and customized approach when impacted by these factors.
